The Party
2023
The installation project The Party consists of a personal reinterpretation of the traditional game 'apple on a string' through a change of both material and colour. Some apples are made of soap others of alabaster (a type of white that recalls a pale skin tone characterized by hues of porcelain and ivory). As for the display, the apples are positioned on wooden structures at the height of the mouth of a teenager. I chose alabaster because this stone reminds me of a light shade of foundation by the same name. The apples appear skin-like similar to when someone turns pale, and their complexion gradually fade. Moreover, the white tone has links to the tradition of classical statuary.
The apples are cast at different stages of biting. They are made of inedible materials. If one tries to eat soap the immediate reaction is revulsion. If one tries to bite alabaster, they will break their teeth. This project reflects the everyday challenges of interacting with others. Furthermore, this sculptural installation refers to the magical thinking connected to apples and fruits with a complex folkloric history and multiple meanings. Through time apples have been symbols of temptation, sin, or immortality, like the Golden Apple in Greek Mythology. Witches cherish apples because when one is sliced open the symbol of the five-pointed star or pentagram is revealed. Apple rituals are still associated with certain festivities, like the night Halloween in many counties of England such as Lancashire.
